Today marks the start of this years Genesis Open after last weeks AT&T pebble beach Pro - Am in which Phil Mickelson added yet another victory to his cabinet, totaling 44 wins on the PGA Tour.

The Genesis Open often attracts a fantastic field with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth and course specialists, Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson all down to compete, so we have another really strong renewal to look forward to. The pick of the opening day pairings is undoubtedly McIlroy, Tiger and Justin Thomas. McIlroy has made a strong start to his PGA Tour season with top-five finishes at both the Sentry Tournament of Champions and the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, where Woods ended tied-20th in his only appearance of 2019 so far. The three players were last in the same group for the 2018 PGA Championship, where Woods posted rounds of 70 and 66 on his way to a runner-up finish, while Thomas and McIlroy finished tied-sixth and tied-50th respectively.

Favorites for the event are not surprisingly all household names such as Dustin Johnson who won this two years ago and he could very easily have won the event three or four times already. Justin Thomas and McIlroy haven't had great previous outings at this event but are well capable when on form. A lot of eyes will be fixed on McIlroy over the coming weeks to see how is his form coming into Masters season. He has made a number of changes to his calendar this year in preparation for capturing his first green jacket, which meant dropping a couple of events he normally competes in.

It should be an interesting few days with a very strong field teeing off later today.
